We were given the creative liberty, and 2 weeks, to design a pavilion of our scale and scope in Chicago’s Iconic Millennium park. The pavilion could be design anywhere within or around the park, and to the scale of our choice. In the spirit of not trying to compete with Frank Ghery’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion, or Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate I set my eyes on and under utilized dock adjacent the Lake Front walking trail.
The 250ft x 8ft pier served as the perfect foundation for a temporary structure. The design comprised of re-thinking and improving the use of a pier and turning it into an experience.
The characteristic light posts found on the pier were re-designed into modular arches of light mechanically spaced out and purposefully fragmented to created depth and dimension.
The arches break off in two directions to frame the view of lake Michigan on one side and the Chicago skyline on the other. The footing of the arches in the water is surrounded by a mesh meant to foster lake vegetation and attract marine life. parts of the fragmented arches are periscopes meant to offer a multi-dimensional experience of what lies under the pavilion in addition to what’s above. The linear segments of the poles serve as spaces for small sail boats to anchor as well. Wooden decking was added to expand the width of the existing peer and ease circulation.
